Job Overview: News10NBC is looking for an Assignment Editor to join our top-rated news team. This position is essential in communicating, coordinating and distributing news coverage assignments to reporters and photographers to cover breaking news and meet deadlines. This position is also responsible for producing content on company's social and digital platforms. TV Producers, assignment editors, newspaper reporters, editors, and web producers are encouraged to apply.
Job Responsibilities:
Actively monitor an array of police scanners and social media, websites, public safety scanners, phones and emails for breaking news, significant events, and interesting community stories.
Coordinate daily logistics and dispatches crews and multimedia journalists to breaking news.
Gather, write, edit content including local news, weather, sports, and public information.
Post content to multiple digital platforms.
Being knowledgeable about local, nation and global events.
Have a good understanding of government and legal policy and procedures.
Generate unique, enterprise story ideas.
Work with producers and reporters to develop complete stories, find contacts, and track follow-ups.
Ability to make well informed decisions quickly during breaking news by notifying the newsroom, assigning crews, and confirming information.
Ensure social media and digital content reflects, enhances and expands on-air product.
Work closely with producers, reporters, and meteorologists in gathering facts and presenting the best news coverage online.
Assign and coordinate logistics between news crews, live trucks and liveU’s; coordinate live shots from trucks and other sources so stories can be broadcast live.
Develop and maintain contacts with law enforcement and fire departments, local government and community organizations to stay updated on current events.
Utilize a variety of technologies for video capture and edit, file transfer, social communication, live traffic cameras, and remote interviews.
Communicates frequently throughout the day regarding changes with reporters, story follows, crew assignments, etc.
Consult newsroom management on difficult editorial decisions. Able to quickly adapt to other duties that arise on short notice.
Reports to work on time and works established schedule/hours including weekdays, nights, weekends and holidays.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualification:
BA or BS degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent experience.
1-2 years previous television assignment desk experience preferred. Exceptional communication skills.
Must have excellent writing including grammar and spelling; and copy-editing skills. Able to write clear and accurate stories.
Advanced critical thinking skills.
Ability to work under pressure with various personalities and meet tight deadlines.
Highly organized, detail oriented, knowledge of news and news-makers.
Familiar with digital platforms and use of social media tools.
Computer literacy required.
Must be able to make good decisions quickly; able to articulate choices and communicate those choices to other news department and station employees.
Compensation and Benefits: When extending an offer, the company considers a variety of factors such as (but not limited to) the candidate's work experience, education/training & key skills as well as internal peer equity and other market and business considerations. The hourly rate of pay for this position is $19.00 per hour to $24.00 per hour. This is a full time (40 hour a week position).
