James "Jim" Harvey
James Harvey passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018 in Bethesda MD. Born December 25, 1926 in New Haven, CT to the late William and Emma Harvey. He is survived by his son, Alan Harvey. He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Lorraine Harvey; daughter, Lynn Harvey; brother, George Harvey; and step-father, Adam Melillo. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After discharge from the military he went to work at WNHC-TV in New Haven, CT as a TV Engineer. He left WNHC in 1956 to become Regional Director for the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians representing TV and Radio employees at ABC and NBC. In 1962 Mr. Harvey joined ABC News as a TV Engineer at their new Washington D.C. news bureau. In his 29 years at ABC he served as Studio Cameraman, Technical Director, Remote Supervisor, Electronic News-gathering Cameraman/Sound man and Maintenance supervisor. Some of the events he covered included the funerals of Presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower, Inaugural Parades, election nights, Watergate hearings and in 1972 he was a member of the advance group of TV Engineers that went to China to prepare for the visit of President Nixon. After retiring from ABC NEWS in 1991 he went to work as NABET Local 31 Vice President, and later President, retiring in 2000.
Family will receive friends at PUMPHREY’S BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE FUNERAL HOME 7557 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD on Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 3 to 6 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, 9601 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 11am. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. If desired, contributions in the name of James Harvey May be made to the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad (www.bccrs.org).
